Affordable IKEA Home Office Under $500

Welcome to the MPD Home Office! We wanted to share this steal of deal for an amazing desk set up from a big box store we all know and love, IKEA!

If you’ve seen our TikTok or Instagram you know that you can get this look for less than $500, and we wanted to share all the details right here.

We also included some of our favourite pin board ideas and accessories to help complete the look. Scroll down for more.

As soon as I moved home from Grand Cayman and re-launched Mia Parres Design, I knew I needed a space that would act as a home office. With plans to grow into a proper office space over the next couple years, I wanted a space that would also function for our growing team. Little did I anticipate that this space would also be come our MPD headquarters when the pandemic hit.

Collaboration is such a big part of our design lifestyle and when it was safe to work within our bubble, we created an office space that was big enough for two MPD Team members to come to work a couple of times a week.

I knew we had a space that was about 150” wide, and that our wish list included office storage for client files, samples and all of our design tools. I also wanted to create a space that was transitional, that could be added to for more MPD Team members…and possibly be moved to our future more permanent office spaces.

We loved the look of all the wood tone counter tops at IKEA, and the fact that they came in so many different sizes. We also know IKEA has some fabulous built in options, desk legs, but wanted to makes sure we maxed out on available storage below the desk.

IKEA Alex Drawer Unit

IKEA Alex Drawer Unit

We always say good design starts with the right foundation.

When you’re working from such a small office space you want to maximize all of the storage possibilities. We love the functionality of the drawer units because they allow us to place our files at the base and all our designer tools in the drawers above. The IKEA Alex Drawer Unit is a great building block for the foundation of the desk. Check them out on the IKEA website for all their variations. This piece is only $129 and we needed x2!

IKEA Pinnarp Desk Top

IKEA PINNARP Countertop

We wanted our wood tones to be light and warm, like our herringbone floors. This IKEA PINNARP Countertop acts as our desktop. And when we wanted to grow our space for two MPD team members, we just doubled the counters and added an extra Alex Storage Units. IKEA has so many different counter tops and sizes, colours and price points, this one was perfect because it measures exactly 74” and we can double it up for a second desk space. Best part? It costs only $249!

We also wanted to complete the look with pinboards, and we love this option from Wayfair. We looked at making some custom options, but these were so accessible, ready to ship and allows us to save for custom when we move into a larger office space.

Add your ergonomic chairs, or in our case, a very stylish repurposed dining chair from our living room set ;) We love a good statement chair, and can’t wait to invest in some beautiful leather office chairs, but in the meantime…these beauties add a lovely textured addition.

For a total of $487 this home office could work for you! In our case we needed an extra space for our designers so it would seat two, so we purchased an extra IKEA Alex Drawer Unit and IKEA PINNARP Countetop to complete the look.

Would love to see your IKEA desk configurations! Comment below if you have any questions!
