Layered Tablescapes

Studio McGee

Tis the season to start gathering inside, hosting family and friends for meal time and making memories!

We love this time of year and also find it so inspiring to create vignettes around the home that don’t have be quintessentially seasonal, but rather a part of bringing your festive spirit to the indoors.

That’s where I think layered tablescapes come in! They can seem overwhelming and most people don’t know where to begin. The beauty of this is, whether your doing pot luck or cooking up a storm, the food will do most of the work!

Here are three simple tips to making your tablescape reflect you!

  1. Bring the outdoors inside. Personally, this is one of my favourite features, as I love when the hydrangeas turn into the soft fall foliage. If you’re lucky enough to have some bushes in your yard, consider creating some groupings on the middle of the table, by the front door, on your kitchen island and even in the bathroom for your guests to enjoy their lingering colours. If not, in one of our previous blogs, we also shared how you can bring the branches inside as well. Foraging can be so much fun, we love to incorporate it into our fall walks, which I know so many of us love to do.

  2. Display your serveware. So many of collect and plan our dishware in groups of 8-10, purchasing matching or perfectly mis matching serveware in larger quantities. Now is the time to display all those beautiful pieces, layered on one another to create individual vignettes for each of your guests. We usually do a charger, larger dinner plate, appetizer plate and a water glass with an optional wine or spirits glass beside. Another fabulous way to bring in some warmth, is adding some brass serving utensils to the mix. Show those babies off! They will work perfectly with our next tip, which I know can be a big game changer.

  3. Table linens. We love table linens, always have. Whether you have a beautiful harvest table and don’t want to cover it up with a full table cloth, or have to bring out the folding tables for the many guests that will be arriving, there are table linens for you. You can do a full table cloth or even a table runner to bring in some pattern and festive colours to your tablescape. We also love keeping our napkins “all season” in natural linens, so you can layer and mix them up without having to worry about collecting too many over the many occasions and seasons. Also the perfect perch for another outdoor piece to take centre stage, such as a branch, some twigs or even a sprig of herbs.

Now comes the fun part! The food. Everything from the turkey, to the cranberry sauce will bring your table to life. Personally, we believe the real joy comes from the gathering, the laughter and sweet memories you make - but we also love a gorgeous and yummy dessert to tie it all together.

Happy thanksgiving to all!
